Keeping Baby Safe
At Home
It can happen in the blink of an eye. You turn your back, just for
a second, and baby has wandered off in search of new things to explore.
Around the house or home office that can be a very dangerous thing.
At TEC, we'd like to help you keep in mind some safety procedures
and tips to keep your baby safe at home, whether around power or electrical
items or just in general. If you have any tips you've found particularly
helpful in your home, please send them in to info@tombigbee.net
and we'll post them on this page.
Baby-Proof Electrical or Power Supply Danger Spots
- Install plastic caps over electrical outlets to keep children from
sticking anything into them.
- Electrical cords are not playthings. Keep them out of the reach of
children.
- Unplug all nearby appliances when bathing your child.
Home Office Tips
- Keep drawers secured especially those with scissors or small objects.
- Make sure they can not be pulled all the way out.
- The contents of most wastebaskets pose numerous hazards for toddlers.
Cover wastebaskets or keep them out of children's reach.
- Secure electrical wires and outlets. Be sure all equipment is well
secured and can not be pulled over.
- Consider making this an off limits room by securing the door.
General Tips
- Smoke from a fire can kill very quickly. Sleep with bedroom doors
closed at night to help keep smoke out and increase the amount of
time you have to get yourself and your children out if you have a
fire.
- Secure purses out of children's reach. They love to play with Mommy's
things. Some of Mommy's things can be very dangerous such as medications,
nail files, pens, cosmetics and small objects.
- Use the sink when mopping floors. Buckets of water left unattended
even for a few moments present a potential drowning hazard for babies
and toddlers.
- Keep high chairs a safe distance from tables and walls so that baby
won't be able to use them to push off with legs and arms and possibly
push over the high chair.
- Do a monthly check of your home. Check each room. If your child isn't
allowed in the room, such as a laundry room, make sure it is secured.
Otherwise, check small or breakable objects and put them away. Check
all furniture and lamps for stability. Make sure any safety devices
you have installed are working adequately. Be sure to check down on
the child's level.
