Helping our neighbors... the Cooperative way
In the true spirit of cooperatives, TEC answered a call for help during Hurricane Gustav’s coastal terror reign in late August and early September.
On September 2nd, Hunter Miles, Johnathon Ozbirn, Dennis Mayo, and Ricky Tice participated in the first TEC crew sent to the aid of our fellow Louisiana cooperative, in Houma, LA, South Louisiana Electric Cooperative Association. A second, relief crew consisting of name, name, name, and name , left the TEC grounds on September 5th to relieve the first crew and continue the AREA cooperative relief efforts for our friends in Louisiana.
In a phone call to Joe Ticheli, Member Service & Communications Department Manager at SLECA, he said, “Hurricane Gustav was more destructive in our area of Louisiana than Katrina or Rita.” When asked how many of their member-owners were with out power Ticheli stated that all twenty thousand of their members had been effected by the storm. “We can not begin to thank our cooperative friends in Alabama for the help that they have provided us during this time. I think it is telling to note that we were contacted by several AREA cooperatives almost immediately after the storm and they didn’t ask if we needed them, they said, ‘We’re coming!’. That’s the cooperative way,” he said.
SLECA is located on the Louisiana Gulf Coast, near Houma, and just southwest of Lake Pontchartrain. Other cooperatives that participated with Tombigbee were Baldwin, Cullman, Marshall-Dekalb, Black Warrior, Joe Wheeler, Clark-Washington, Cherokee, and Arab cooperatives.
Out of all the cooperatives, eleven service and eleven construction crews helped Louisiana from the AREA cooperatives.
NOTE: The following crew were sent to Houmas after the article in Alabama Living went to press - Phillip Lindsey, Wade Peoples, Matt Moody and Chris Wilson.
